Boys' Ceiling Fan

Or an alternate title for this post: Why You Should Never Bring Your Kids with You to Lowe's When Choosing a Ceiling Fan.

I'm a fan of ceiling fans. No pun intended but since I went there--they're really COOL and installing them is a BREEZE. Ha. Okay, I'm done. So we went to Lowe's the other day to pick out a ceiling fan. Mistake #1. Ya see, I was looking at their ad and saw that Hunter ceiling fans were 20% off for a limited time (Memorial Day sale). Plus Mitch had a coupon--$10 off $50 that expired on Monday. Why was this a mistake, you ask? 'Cause we felt pressured to get something right then and there. Which is really dumb, cause that's not how we roll. I mull decisions like these over for a while (actually we both do...we try not to make hasty purchases unless we totally LOVE something or it's super cheap). So there we were in Lowe's with our three boys who were relentlessly annoying each other (and us) by fighting over who gets to sit where in the "race cart" (well two out of the three were). So the whole experience wasn't fun and we ended up getting a fan (it wasn't even a Hunter:/) that we didn't hate but didn't love either. Let me back up and show you what was previously up in the boys' room and explain a few things.

So originally when we redid the boys' room, we took down the ceiling fan 'cause it was really dated. And in its place, Mitch rigged a lamp shade, turning it into a pendant light. I really liked how it looked but function-wise, it was a dud. I'm a lover of light so in the evenings when I'd turn the switch on and it was still pretty dark in their room, I cringed. Plus there's like zero air circulation in their room. So it had to go. Cuteness and all. And up this guy went (aka the Lowe's fan).

It's not horrible looking. It's just...eh. Here are some pros and cons: I like that it's ORB (oil rubbed bronze) so it kinda blends in against the dark ceiling. And I like those prong thingies that attach the blades to the center part--they're more modern-looking than most. What I don't like about it are the lights. I just don't think they go with that room. It's kinda hard to tell in the pictures but they have a marble faux finish and they're yellow-y. We could just swap out the globes for something else, but I didn't find anything at Lowe's that I liked. Plus, that's extra money we're shellin' out. And I wish the blades were darker.

So I'm not sure what the next step is. Maybe take it back? I'm now searching the internet for a fan I like. Something that has lights and looks somewhat modern-ish.

Here's what we have in the master bedroom and also in the living room and I love it. Just plain Jane.

And this is the one in Finn's room. Love it too. But the light is not overly bright, so I'd want something brighter for sure.

So what are your thoughts? Suck it up and keep our mediocre-looking fan or return it? After looking at it on here, it's really not THAT bad. It's just not FANtastic;) Okay, I'm really done this time. Promise.

  1. Funny we JUST did this but at home depot. I didn't find any fans that I liked but with a heat wave coming we needed something. I went with the boring cheapo fans for now until I find what I want. The fans are UGLY and I don't think they will match at all. I love your plain jane fan but I need a light on ours. The one you got your boys doesn't look awesome but it doesn't look bad either...sometimes it is all about function LOL

  2. The fan is kinda "eh". I like the wood blades and the simple metal pieces but the shades are so...plain?...builder basic looking? Maybe changes those out? Maybe clear glass shades?

    1. It is so "builder grade." That's what I told Mitch too...you'd see this fan in a new construction home. Which is totally not us at all. I think I know what needs to be done:/ Thanks for your input!

  3. I did the same thing a couple months ago at Lowe's. Big ole' stack of Hunters on the floor, deep discount, money in pocket, so I jumped. Not my most favorite, but liveable. Dire need for Summer here in the South! Then last week I found the old fashion bubble glass shades (which happens to match the glass in my china cabinet) and am in total love now! All this to say, change the shades to something more modern, streamlines. Worse case, is that you end up taking it all back! ;)

  4. If you don't want the hassle of taking it down, and then back to the store, just modify it. Paint the blades darker. It might even be cool to use the same color as the ceiling? The only thing that is jumping out at me are the shades. Those are not expensive to replace...............and there are a ton of options out there. You just need more modern shades :)

  5. Paint the blades, replace the globes.

  6. I suggest using http://www.lampsplus.com/fans/ instead of Home Depot or Lowe's. They have a much better selection. Free shipping too!

  7. Can I tell you one more negative? My son had a similar fan. Being the boy he is he hit the pull cord thingie for the fan, launching it into the glass shades and broke one and somehow fried the lights too. Agreed bkack or ORB blades would be awesome. If you could create something more industrial for the light portion.

  8. I think the thought of having to take it down would make me keep it. I don't think it is that bad, but the shades are making it look builder basic and you have spent so much time making you house unique.

  9. clear shades, edison bulbs, paint blades black

    1. Wish I could use Edison bulbs but this fan takes a special sized bulb (of course, right?!) 'Cause that was a thought I had--just remove the shades and put in Edisons. Boo-hoo.

  10. Changing out the light fixture would help also. One light rather than the multi lights makes it go away as well. I like the silver fan!

  11. I spent extra to get a light kit I liked and everyday I look at it, I'm grateful. We bought ours from lightingdirect.com. They have hundreds of options. This one from Lamps Plus is really cool, though a little pricey: http://www.lampsplus.com/products/oil-rubbed-bronze-industrial-cage-3-60-watt-ceiling-fan-light-kit__y2846-u8886.html.

    1. That's a good idea too. I do like that caged one but it's more than what we paid for for the fan! Crazy. There's gotta be a cheaper option. Thanks for leaving the link:)
