Now speaking of Ry's room...yeah, well it's not going to be Ry's room for too much longer. As many of you know, we're expecting our third little one come November, so Ry and Bryce are shackin' up together in what is currently the master bedroom (If I've totally confused you, just go here--we're kinda in the middle of a major renovation.) and the babe is getting Ryder's room. And that's all fine and dandy if we have a third boy. But if for some reason it should happen to be a girl that makes her debut, we're pretty much screwed. (Oh and we're not huge planners around here, so we won't find out the sex until that baby makes his/her appearance.) As you know, Ryder's room definitely reads "boy" so it'll be
I wish I knew how to make one of those cool inspiration boards that so many of you are great at making...oh well, I guess that required more than one inspiration, and this fabric is pretty much my only inspiration at the moment. I'm not going all crazy checking out nurseries everywhere...actually my Pinterest nursery board only has three pins on it:/ And they're of boy's nurseries. Anyway, isn't that fabric pretty? I love all things birds so when I saw these lined curtains at one of my regular thrift shops (way before I was even pregnant), it didn't take me long to stick 'em in my cart. I can totally design an entire nursery around these puppies. Whatcha think? Love or hate? They're definitely oldies...not the latest fabric off the rack, which is a big part of why I like them so much. I'm not so much of a big-box-store-kinda girl.
I do want to spray the crib another color and I was leaning towards gray, but the wall color is gray, so now I don't know. Here's what it currently looks like.
If you have any inspiring ideas, I'd love to hear/see them. Remember, it has to go either way--boy or girl. So magenta is out of the question. (even though I think a magenta crib would look pretty sweet in a girl's room) I guess I just don't want to get my hopes up either way (boy/girl) and get a design ingrained in my head and be disappointed when the other sex pops out, know what I mean? But on the other hand, I guess it IS good to have somewhat of a plan. So we're going to have a "casual plan"--ie we're going to do the work (minus the crib) after the baby arrives but have an idea of a direction. Does that make sense to anyone but me? All you planners out there are probably tearing out your hair right about now, aren't you? Ahh...it's all right. We'll be fine:) And I'm pretty confident the baby will have a cute room. Don't worry.
So let me hear your ideas and if you have any nurseries pinned, I (guess) I'd like to see them;) And welcome to any new followers--thanks for stoppin' by!
I have just come over here from Young House Love and absolutely love your blog.
ReplyDeleteAdded to the blog roll and looking forward to your future adventures. And congrats on the new baby, keeping my fingers crossed for a healthy pregnancy.
Regards from Belgium,
Silke
I think you should paint the crib black which is gender neutral and if baby #3 is a girl, it ties into the tree branches and parts of the birds on your curtains.
ReplyDeleteCongratulations on new baby!! YHL sent me here, I am so glad they did!! Have you thought about white or oil rubbed bronze for the crib? Ryders room is amazing, love all the retro items. *p.s. I 'm a planner. This might be hard for me. LOL Just the fact that you could find out if boy or girl, & you don't, will be hard! LOL*
ReplyDeleteOh but it's so much fun waiting! The hardest one not to find out was my first, and after that we just think it's so cool to hold out so now it's not even a temptation. I wonder how ORB would look on wood...you think it'd make it look like an iron crib?? That actually might be a super cool look...I'll add it to my "list"--thanks:)
DeleteI just hopped over too from YHL and loved to see the bedroom reno- great job!Spray the crib black or even yellow? to go with the gray. I don't even think you have too change the wall color- pink accents with gray too!
ReplyDeleteFirst off congratulations! :) (and also congrats on the feature over at YHL,talk about big leagues!)
ReplyDeleteI think that although there are lots of elements in the room currently that lean boy, it could easily go girl too (in a rustic/vintage, cottage-y kind of way) since I imagine you'll (probably) be swapping out most of your son's furniture/decor, you really are looking at a blank slate.
We were never 'planners' either, finding out if it was a boy or a girl after all that time and effort (growing, loving, labouring) was one of the best surprises when we met our son! :)
I can't imagine not finding out the sex! Not that I'm a particularly great planner, it would just drive me insane! Anyways, I really love Ryder's room and can definitely see it as a girl's room (I have a little girl, so I see everything through pink colored glasses!). Anyways, I would paint the crib white, since that's neutral but can also work into a very boyish or very girlish theme later on once you know. I think you would like this nursery: http://keepingitcozy.blogspot.com/2012/03/vintage-nursery.html
ReplyDeleteGood luck! And congratulations! xx
Yes, I love that vintage nursery from Keeping It Cozy. She did a great job in there and that's a great example of rustic chic. Thanks for refreshing my memory:) And man, it's so fun not finding out...such a thrill! You really should try it sometime;)
DeleteAnother YHL-er here! A soft yellow could be pretty and fairly gender-neutral for the walls, and it would complement the ceiling nicely. You could easily switch out a few accessories once the baby arrived to make it more feminine or masculine. Just a thought! Major congrats!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Paige, for the idea...I've thought about yellow for the crib but not for the walls...hmm. Actually we'll prob keep it as is and try to work with the color in there now. I "think" I can make it girly;)
DeleteI too, found you because of John and Sherry :)Ryder's room is amazing and makes me wish I had a boy!! (We have 3 girls.) I spent some times reading your blog last night and realized you guys are in PA. I grew up in PA but we just moved from my hometown to West Reading. I don't feel like we will ever get this house together. We have only been here 6 months and with 3 little ones things don't move very quickly. When I finally finish painting my girls' rooms one will be green and one will be yellow. That gives us lots of options for everything else. I look forward to seeing what you guys come up with!
ReplyDelete~Rosemary
The curtains are super cool, but do you think they're gender neutral enough with the pink? I was thinking paint the crib yellow with navy accents throughout the room. Oh, and I came over from YHL and fell in love with your blog. Looking forward to keeping up with all your adventures!
ReplyDeleteThose curtains would only be going up if we had a girl. Otherwise the buffalo check are in for the long haul:) Thanks for stopping by!
DeleteLove your blog. So glad YHL featured you. We're practically neighbors (I'm in Chester County). Your kitchen looks beautiful, I love the cabinets. I look forward to visiting some of the places where you've found your treasures!
ReplyDelete-Jocelyn-
Ya can't beat thrifting in Lancaster County! Thanks for your kind words:)
DeletePopping over from YHL. I love your style!
ReplyDeleteCongratulations on the new addition to the family and an opportunity to find a new look for the wonderful room.
I LOVE the fabric you picked for a girl. It would be lovely with bright accents to pick up the curtains colors and the existing wall color & awesome ceiling.
As regard to other nursery pins, I recently finished my son's nursery which is pinned here http://pinterest.com/sassyhappy/bradley-s-nursery/ and blogged here http://sassyhappy.wordpress.com/2012/02/10/nursery-source-list//
Awesome nursery, Marcie! Thanks for sharing:) The navy blue (on your walls) has got me thinking...could I spray the crib navy?? I don't know...would that work for a girl, ya think?
DeleteI LOVE that fabric ... it would make such a lovely girls nursery :). No matter what, you'll pull it together and it will be great!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Jenn:)
DeleteLove love love the fabric! I think it would be absolutely adorable with navy paint on the walls and the crib the same color. If its a boy I would paint the crib red, I think it still says vintage but is playful for a little one :)
ReplyDeleteI love the curtains. I think I would go with the mustardy yellow in those. Would look great with the curtains and the gray and would stiil tie in with the rustic colors in the boys' room if you have another boy. Good luck and I'm so glad I found your blog!
ReplyDeleteI'm glad you found my blog too--love all these great suggestions from all of you newbies! Mustard yellow...hadn't thought of that one yet, but I agree it could go with either sex. Man, you guys have given me a lot to think about! Thanks:)
DeleteJust another YHLer here (love your blog BTW) .. I think a yellow (not a pastel) crib would be adorable. It will pull the yellow from the "girl" fabric you have, and it'll be easy to find a "boy" fabric that goes too. Or, just throwing this out there: olive green. Still in the "girl" fabric, which will really make any pink/magenta/red accessories really POP !! But easy to transition to a boy too.
ReplyDeleteAnyway, congrats and good luck !!
Actually, the gray walls would go well with that floral fabric in the curtains, if it's a girl. At least, it looks like there's gray in it from the photo. As you say, it's hard to tell true colors online. Also looks like some warm colors in the brown/golden/tan range. Seems like greige painted on the crib would work well for a boy or girl, and look good against the gray walls. Since you like thrifting, maybe you could find some large, older children's books with fun illustrations to pull out and frame, creating a "storybook" theme for the room. And that way you'd be able to go with a palette of soft colors (since most older books were done in muted colors) that would work for a boy or girl. There are blues and greens that would work for a girl, and not all pinks shout "girl" either -- I'm thinking aqua, mint, melon. And then once you know whether it's a boy or girl, you can add splashes of color in the accessories (or bedding?) that suit the gender. Happy planning!
ReplyDeleteI really really really love those curtains. If you have a boy send them my way. That fabric is really similar to the fabric on the sette under the stairs at Skeeter's house from the movie The Help. Just different colors. And you are killing me on the no planning part, I am getting stressed for you!
ReplyDeleteI really really really love that fabric. It reminds me a lot of the fabric on the settee under the stairs at Skeeter's house on The Help movie. Just different colors. You are killing me with the non planning.
ReplyDeletecongratuations on being featured on young house love AND congratuations on the baby!!! super exciting. love the floral fabric (great find) and love that your not finding out what you're having-- totally my style too :)
ReplyDeleteI popped over from YHL and love your sweet blog and style, too! And I have to say how excited I am to read that you're going to wait until baby's birthday to find out boy or girl! We did that 13 years ago and I can't seem to talk anyone into waiting. The moms-to-be all pat my hand and smile like I'm suggesting they name the kid Snufflufagus! Enjoy your pregnancy and the excitement it brings.
ReplyDeleteYay for the baby! Rustic girly is quite easy and you could easily transform this room for a girl with calico, lace and burlap. And maybe some yellow or coral for colour? I can see it all in my mind :)
ReplyDeleteFirst off I want to say congratulations on the baby! I love the curtains you have if it's a girl. For the crib I would paint it the navy in the fabric. Girls like blue too :) and you can accent the crib with bedding that highlights the yellows and pinks and green colors in the curtains as well. I think it would look darling! Whatever you do though, I'm sure I'll love it as I do all your other rooms.
ReplyDeleteOh, and please show down the road what you do with a shared room for your boys. Mine share a room too and I would love to see your ideas!
Kate
Thanks for your ideas, Kate! I'm diggin' the thought of a navy crib:) And you can be sure we'll keep you guys updated on the shared room--I've been brainstorming about that one for a while and am excited to finally execute a plan in there...eek! Thanks for stopping by.
Deleteyes!! Mustard yellow! definitely. will pop with the gray!
ReplyDeleteBTW, I didn't even know you were expecting!! Congratulations!!! Have you seen the nursery posted on Holly Mathis' blog today? I totally liked it b/c it was so eclectic. It might not be your thing, but I think she painted the crib gray too.
ReplyDeleteCongratulations!! I also think the mustard yellow will work beautifully... Will look great with gray and then you can pop in with pink or turquoise accents. Assume you are leaving the ceiling but you could do a thin white wash on it if you want to lighten it for a nursery (or a girl :)
ReplyDeleteCongratulations! Ryder's room is awesome and can easily be made to feel feminine with that fabric. I haven't noticed if it's been suggested yet, but the red on the bird and the large flower would make a great colour for the crib. A word of caution though, don't spray paint it! Spray paint is incredibly toxic and I don't know for sure, but probably off-gases for a long time. Use a low/no V.O.C. paint and brush it on or use a sprayer.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the tip, Mel! Not really looking forward to brushing the paint on though:/ I may send it out to my cabinet guy to spray for me. I'll keep you guys updated!
