The color we chose for the walls is Benjamin Moore Thunder. We had to use it...we had the swatch on the wall in our kitchen (actually it's still there) and whenever someone comes over they give us a weird look when they see the words BM Thunder underneath the swatch. Funny. And yes, gross. Unless you don't have a twisted mind like my friends and I.
First things first, this is what this room looked like prior...well several years ago anyway when Ryder was a baby. You can read more about that here.
What made us decide it was time for a wee makeover was when I saw this metal bed in my neighbor's burn pile one day. (Read more here.) I didn't want to put a new (to us) bed in a periwinkle room. It was time for a change.
I sprayed it a metallic blackish/gray...
using this paint.
The duvet cover I found at a thrift store literally days before the makeover was complete. Earlier in the week I talked with Mitch about asking a friend to make a duvet cover for Ryder's bed. I really didn't think I'd be able to find anything second-handed. But wouldn't ya know, a few days later I walked into a thrift store and found this duvet cover and two pillow shams for $3. It was the exact size I needed and it's from Pottery Barn. Don't ya love how things have a way of working out?
The curtains I found a week or so before at the same thrift store. Again, this was another item that I didn't really want to spend a ton of money on and when I saw these buffalo check curtains for $7, I knew it was a match made in heaven. The quilt at the foot of the bed was a Christmas present from my parents from JCP and the sheets are from Target.
Bookcase holding all of Ry's books (obviously), toys, etc.
This is what that bookcase used to look like before a little love was poured into it. You can read more about that transformation here. Cost of bookcase--$1 (I think).
All of the toys were purchased at either thrift stores or auctions, or were gifts. The old "Kids at Play" sign was bought years ago at a thrift store for 50 cents. The cute "vintage" radio was a wedding present. It was kept in our 50s kitchen back in the day when I was into all things red and chrome. The vintage Ryder truck was purchased off ebay for Ry's first Christmas. We'll do a separate post on the jelly jar light--we rigged it, so there's more to talk about with that one.
This armoire was a ridiculous find at an auction. Seriously, you must read the story. Cost: $2 (in the video, I said it was $3--yeah, I stand corrected after I reread this post.) You can see/read how I transformed it here.
I found this desk at the same auction for $12--my splurge for the day;)
The dresser was given to us by the same lovely neighbor who gave me the bed (thanks, Marilyn!). They were cleaning out a lady's house and she gave them a bunch of stuff to throw out. Marilyn asked if I wanted to pick through the stuff before they dumped it. Can you believe this was considered trash? I love the casters--they're made of wood.
The Federal style mirror was a Christmas gift from Mitch. The antique Knickerbocker bear I got at an auction years ago for $1. The lamp base is an old fishing pail. I saw the lamp years ago before I was even married and thought it'd be perfect in a little boy's room. The shade is from Target. And the old parking sign we got on our honeymoon.
The bench, my sister-in-law gave me. I painted it Ben Moore Rockport Gray. The wooden tool box Mitch picked up at an auction for $7. The old wire basket underneath I got at a thrift store for $2. It's the perfect place to stash Bryce's diapers (remember we live in a two-bedroom rancher so some spaces must have dual purposes). The suitcases were from Land of Nod--I got them for Ry's nursery back in the day.
The pinboard I got from the Pottery Barn Outlet for $6.
This is what the tiles looked like before we covered them in linen.
These tiles are currently for sale at Pottery Barn Teen for $25-$35 each. Yikes!! So yeah, we could have spent $210. Instead, we spent about $11 with the fabric we got from Calico Corner Outlet.
Mitch used the brackets that came with the boards to attach them to each other then I covered the whole thing with fabric. We did a similar project in our kitchen.
As I mentioned in the video, one of the first things to go soon after we moved into this house were the sliding closet doors. Easy solution: hang curtains. These are from the Vintage Modern collection of Thomas O'Brien that I picked up at GW several years ago. They used to hang in our living room.
I don't tell you about all these deals to brag (and I hope I don't come across that way), but to motivate you to try it yourself. Deals are out there, guys! And I've found that if you're just patient and are willing to search, you'll find what you want. So we were able to makeover Ryder's room on a very small budget. Actually the only things we bought new were the ceiling fan and the jelly jar light (more on those in another post). Everything else came from thrift stores, auctions, or were given to us. I love the thrill of finding deals...there's nothing like it!

Amazing-- I can't believe all those fantastic deals!!
ReplyDeleteThis is such a great boys room! What is the wall color? I love it!
ReplyDeleteIt's Ben Moore Thunder
DeleteThanks!
ReplyDeleteLove everything about this room! I've been thinking about bamboo blinds like yours, they add such a cozy feel to the room. Can you tell me where you got them, and what they are called?
ReplyDeleteThanks!!!
Thanks:) I got the bamboo blinds years ago at Ollies (it's a bargain overstock store on the East Coast). You can find them pretty much anywhere though but they can be quite pricey--so I'd definitely shop around for the best deal. Good luck!
DeleteWow, I live just west of Philly and I've never heard of Ollie's, but it turns out there's one in Cherry Hill. Looks like a great place to check out!
DeleteThanks again, and I love your house!!!
This room looks amazing! I'm not a little boy, and I would love to move into it. I don't have the time or storage to shop the way you do, but it really gets me to thinking about my shopping habits. I would've seen those knobs and thought about how the color is all wrong. It's brilliant that you spray-painted them! Thanks for enlightening me.
ReplyDeletewhere is the ceiling fan from? how much did it cost?

Deletethis is a great room for a boy or anyone looking for a cozy hideout! thanks for the details.
ReplyDeleteKat, your boys room turned out amazing! I love the Tunder wall color. It is the perfect gray! I also have that same ceiling fan in my master bedroom :) It's a great fan!
ReplyDeleteKat! Congrats on your YHL feature -- this room is more than deserving :)
ReplyDeleteLove the old school desk. Where are the auctions where you get these great finds...wondering where I can find something similar near me?
ReplyDeleteWe have a lot of auction companies here in Lancaster County...most of them do real estate but they also do personal property auctions as well. I'd check auctionzip.com and see what kind of auctions are in your area. Hope that helps and happy bidding!
DeleteWhat an amazing room for a boy to grow up in! I love all the vintage boy-ish details and the fact that you spent so little on it. I even love the pallet ceiling, and I'm not usually into the whole pallet thing, but that ceiling is perfect!
ReplyDeleteSaw this over at YHL and I love it. Such a great room for a little man, and at a great price. Love your blog!!
ReplyDeleteI have that exact same desk, which I bought at an antiques festival back in April. I paid $25 and thought that was a steal! The base on mine is painted white, although I think it was originally blue. It's just about the cutest desk I ever did see. Visiting from YHL!
ReplyDeleteStopping by from YHL. What a transformation! I absolutely love the ceiling. Well done!
ReplyDeleteWow, how awesome! I love that you told us all the prices and locations of things... that just makes it that much more amazing :) It didn't sound braggy at all!!
ReplyDeleteVisiting from YHL :)
Saw the feature on YHL- this room is perfect! It's exactly the kind of room I'd love my son to have (you know- if I have one in the future lol). Love all the rustic and masculine touches and that ceiling is AMAZING!! Thanks for the inspiration!!
ReplyDeleteWhat a lucky boy! This room is awesome. I'm collecting and storing things for the day when we do my little guy's room(it needs drywall/electrical/hvac stuff first!).
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing your finds-there's lots of us that get a thrill over thrifting and I'm one of them!
Looks great! I've not converted my boy's room from nursery to toddler-friendly yet.
ReplyDeleteI have question though regarding BM Thunder? Do you like the color? I've had swatches of it on my master bedroom wall for about a year (shameful!), and have yet to pull the trigger on it vs. a similar yet lighter color (Behr burnished clay). I wanted something that wouldn't have too much green or blue undertones. I wanted a true taupey-gray color.
Thanks for your input!
~ Karen
Well I'd say it's a taupey-gray color for sure. We have a Behr color (I think it was Wheat something) in our bedroom which is right next to Ry's room and I'm looking at the difference right now. Our bedroom definitely reads more brown while Ry's room has more gray in it. It is a dark color though. Thankfully he has two windows in his room so that makes a big difference. When I have the curtains pulled, it's dark in there! If you're debating whether it's too dark, it probably is. I could definitely go a shade or two lighter and might have to soon since we're changing his room into the nursery! Good luck with your choice. Hope I helped a little:/ And thanks for stopping by!
DeleteGreat to know! I'll probably have to go a shade or two lighter than the original to make it work.
DeleteCongrats on your soon-to-be new addition! :)
I decorate our 1860 home the same way you did this amazing little room...from thrift stores, yard sales and the like. Its the only way for me and no one would ever know unless I tell them differently. Wonderful job! I look forward to reading more of your blog:)
ReplyDelete*Found you on YHL today!

ReplyDeleteThe bottom is an old fishing pail. I bought it like that (it was already converted into a lamp) years ago. I thought it was cool too, perfect for a little boy's room. Thanks for stopping by!
DeleteAdorable little boys room. Love it all. Love all the great deals you found. I'm stopping over from YHL. Glad I found your blog. Have a great day. :)
ReplyDeleteComing over from YHL. You did a great job! I love all your great finds - you have every reason to brag :)
ReplyDeleteI saw your room on YHL. Wow. That ceiling is fab. I also love that you put a curtain on the closet. I've been thinking about doing that in our bedroom. Great job. You should be proud!
ReplyDeleteIt looks amazing! I am looking to redo my son's room soon, take it from nursery to a more of a "big boy" room so this gives me some great inspiration.
ReplyDeleteLooks fantastic! Although my favorite thing is actually that "splurge" of a desk...I've been keeping my eye out for one for my son. :-)
ReplyDeleteOver from YHL on your feature - congrats! Question: that bicycle on top of the armoire...it is FABULOUS and where did you find it? Thanks so much and again, great job!!
ReplyDeleteThe bike is actually a print I bought at Christmas Tree Shop (I think that's what it's called). I think it was like $7...a splurge I was willing to take;) Thanks for stopping by!

ReplyDeleteLove the pallet ceiling and buffalo check curtains! Can you tell me the size of the checks/squares on the curtains?
ReplyDeleteThank you! They're 1" square checks.
Deletethe rooms looks so comfy. And with the money you spent on the transformation - amazing!
ReplyDeleteHi Kat, I just popped over to look at your blog after seeing your room remodel on YHL. I love the creative things you've done on a budget! I'm a little curious about how you acquired a parking sign on your honeymoon... but maybe that's something for another show. ha! I'll be checking in to read your blog from now on. Thanks! -- Kat (yes, my nickname too). :)
ReplyDeleteHA! Good one;) Nice to meet you, Kat, and thanks for stopping by!
DeleteHi, stopped by from YHL....... so, so cute! I can't believe all the amazing finds, and what a great eye you have in putting it all together! Awesome :)
ReplyDeleteWhere did you get the Philles trash can? I love it!
ReplyDeletePretty sure I scored that guy at a thrift store years ago. It sat in our attic for a long time and I pulled it out for Ry's room. Thanks for loving it! We think it's pretty cool too:)
DeleteAmazing! Love what you've done! Had to come over from YHL to say how awesome everything looks. Love the pallet ceiling! So clever. Off to check out your house tour now :)
ReplyDeleteMy husband is a huge PHILLIES, EAGLES,FLYERS and SIXERS fan! We live in owensboro ky but his moms from Philly! So I had to ask when I saw the cute trash can!
ReplyDeleteYou got yourself a good man;)
DeleteWow you did such a great job! I love your son's room. Great finds and transformations!
ReplyDeleteLove the updated style you brought to the room! My favourite is definitely the desk--what a great find.
ReplyDeleteI saw this room makeover on Young House Love and I'm so glad you shared it with them. Love the entire room. So impressed and inspired with how you re-purposed and thrifted most things. You did a great job.
ReplyDeleteHi! I was wondering where you got the ceiling fan for this room? I love it!
ReplyDeleteWe got it at Lowe's. Here's the link--just copy it and paste in your browser.
Deletehttp://www.lowes.com/pd_144477-29369-3MVR44BSD_0__?productId=3283952&Ntt=modern+ceiling+fan&pl=1¤tURL=%2Fpl__0__s%3FNtt%3Dmodern%2Bceiling%2Bfan&facetInfo=
I love this room it is amazing! you guys did a fantastic job! Can you just tell me though how you hung the curtains in the closet? We are going to be doing that but I'm not sure which method would be the best!
ReplyDeleteI just used a spring rod shower curtain rod...it works great!
DeleteKat, holy cow! This is awesome! Where have I been?? You are the pro at doing design on a dime....let me tell you. I can't get over all of your DIYs and thrift/tag sale/etc. finds!! You make it look all so easy and effortless. Great job!!
ReplyDeleteYou did an awesome job on his room! I love that you did it on a budget and you shopped at thrift stores. I hope find cool stuff for my little boys' train bedroom too. This is the style of stuff I'm looking for. Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteI had to post because I have that exact same bear! He is my "Teddy" and was given to me when I was two by my grandfather. I have never seen one like him before and have always wanted to know his origins. He is so beat up now (survived a music-box-endectomy, one 2 year old, and four puppies) that my daughter calls him "Franken-bear". Can you tell I'm a bit excited! Thanks for posting about him, now I can look him up!
ReplyDeleteLove, love, love the "Ryder" truck (how perfect!) and the DIY ceiling, but I think the entire room turned out fabulous. I can DIY a lot of stuff (and often do), but my rooms tend to turn out too match-matchy and less eclectic - even though I prefer the eclectic look.
Ha--Frankenbear! Glad I could help ya with that:)
ReplyDeleteI ran across your blog which is so interesting. You are very creative and frugal in your decorating. But, I am interested in how you came up with the name Ryder for your son. My son who is now 30 is also named Ryder, and we have not seen many others with that name. Keep up your great work
ReplyDeleteHi! Thanks for stopping by and leaving a comment:) When looking for baby names, we were watching a hockey game and one of the players was named Michael Ryder. I said to my husband, "How about Ryder??" and it stuck. We love the name!
DeleteBlessings to you and your family--thanks for taking the time to respond to my "nosey" question about your son's name :)
