Decisions, Decisions

What's your take on industrial fans? Are you a fan? (Get it? Are you a fan?? Okay, maybe not.)

We're at the point where we need to choose one for our bedroom. Ceiling fans are often frowned upon in some interior design circles. And while I must admit some fans are pretty hideous, in our case, they're a must. They just make sense. They circulate the air--cool in summer and warm in winter and they're practical. But choosing the right one can be tricky. A few requirements for us are: one that doesn't have a light(s) in it, and preferably something more modern than '80s looking. i.e. we don't want something like this.

But rather like this.

This industrial fan is from Amazon and is only $63.12. Pretty good deal if ya ask me. But I just can't get the image of a rusted out metal fan with wobbly blades and a funky clanking sound hanging from one measly screw in some broke-down warehouse out of my head. I'm sure it doesn't do that, but that's what I think of when I see it. Saying that, I do like the look of it though: cool, sleek, and modern.

Or do we want something more warmish? (Just look at the fan--don't be partial because of the loving, smiley family time going on around.)

Part of me wants to take a shot with the industrial, but the other part is scared. Shoot, that's what design is all about, right? Taking chances. Whatcha think? Am I off my rocker if I want the modern one?

  1. I think you should go for it with the modern, silver, industrial fan! Be true to yourself and what you like. It would look great in your house and fit right into your decor!

  2. My first thought was to go with the warmer wood one. However, as I look at the pictures, the industrial one blends in more. I also noticed that the blades seem smaller in the more modern one...I don't know if that is good or bad. :)

  3. I vote for the modern one. I think the warm one just looks dated. I'm not a "fan" of the fan but I understand if you have to get one:)

  4. I'm not a big fan of fans :), but if you need one I think the industrial look is definitely the way to go.

  5. Oh this is a hard one for me. I never turned on a fan in my life until I got married, I would love to have a pretty chandy instead of a fan. But...if I had to choose I would say industrial. I do think the wood looks warmer but you notice it. And for less than $65 you should try out the industrial fan. You can always sell it on craigslist.

  7. I like the warm fan, better, but my parents-in-law have the sleek industrial one and it looks pretty great too. We have SUCH an ugly fan in our living room with horrible, horrible eighties glass globe lights on it. I would much prefer the alternatives you gave, because like you, we need it. No air conditioning in the Bay Area...
